An ultrasonic sensor is a device that uses sound waves with frequencies beyond the human hearing range (typically around 40 kHz) to measure the distance to an object. It works by emitting an ultrasonic pulse through a transmitter, which travels through the air and reflects off an object. The sensor’s receiver then detects the returning pulse, and the time taken for the pulse to return is used to calculate the distance based on the speed of sound.

Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in applications such as robotics, distance measurement, obstacle avoidance, and automation systems. They are effective in a variety of environments, including both indoor and outdoor settings, and are capable of detecting objects regardless of color, lighting conditions, or transparency, which makes them more versatile than infrared sensors. The measurement is typically precise and stable, with typical ranges of up to several meters.
